Heute wurde es ernst. Nachdem ich mühsam mein ganzes Gepäck zum Autohndler geschleppt habe, hieß es dann: Willkommen alleine im Sydneyer Downtown-Linksverkehr. Und es war garnicht mal so schlimm. Das Schwierigste ist das Abbiegen: Einerseits natürlich wegen der verkehrten Seiten (rechts vor links gilt hier übrigens auch und nicht etwa links vor rechts), anderseits, weil die Hebel für Blinker und Scheibenwischer auch verkehrtrum sind, so dass ich doch 2, 3 mal den Scheibenwischer angeworfen habe obwohl ich eigentlich blinken wollte. Gerade in Sydney war ich aber schon sehr froh, mir ein Navi gekauft zu haben.

Gestatten, mein Name ist Nico und ich bin ein dunkelgrüner, langweiliger aber hoffentlich solider Ford-Kombi
Nach ca. 2 Stunden oder so bin ich dann in den Blue Mountains angekommen in einem kleinen Örtchen namens Katoomba (eine der vielen Aborigine-Namen hier in Australien). Die im Lonely Planet angegebenen 18 Tausend Einwohner mag ich fast nicht glauben.Wohnen tue ich hier in der im Lonely Planet empfohlenen Jugendherberge (einem YHA). Die Zimmer haben endlich mal Leselampen, sind sonst aber recht unspektakulär. Der große, saubere Gemeinschaftsbereich hats mit Kicker, Pool-Table, Flipper, Street Fighter 2-Automat und so weiter aber ganz schön in sich. Das Internet hier ist zwar nicht kostenlos (ich habe mir eine 24-Stunden Karte für 15 Dollar geholt) aber dafür endlich mal wieder schnell.

Angekommen, habe ich gleichmal die Scenic World-Attraktionen mitgemacht, die da bestehen aus…

…aus einer kurzen aber sehr steilen Fahrt abwärts mit diesem Gefährt…

…einem kleinen Weg durch den hiesigen Wald…

…einer Fahrt wieder nach oben mit dieser Gondel…

…und einer Fahrt mit einer Gondel mit Glas-Boden-Bereich von Klippe zu Klippe. 25 Dollar waren hierfür durchaus noch in Ordnung. Der Blick auf die Blue Mountains ist dabei teilweise echt atemberaubend. Fotos können das leider kaum rüberbringen.

Die Steinformation auf letzterem Bild ist hier recht bekannt und heißt “Three Sisters”. Einer Aborigine-Sage nach, hat ein Zauberer die drei Schwestern zu Stein verwandelt, um sie vor, ich glaube Lüstlingen, zu schützen. Allerdings starb der Zauberer, bevor er sie wieder zurückverwandeln konnte. Dumm gelaufen…
Auch witzig ist es übrigens Vögel wie diese in freier Natur zu sehen. Sonst kennst man sie ja nur aus der Tierhandlung oder dem Zoo…

Soweit zu meinem ersten Schritt aus Sydney raus, morgen wird dann mal ein wenig gewandert hier, ich freu mich schon.

Gestern habe ich es getan: Ich hbe ein Auto gekauft. Geworden ist es ein Ford Falcon Kombi, Baujahr 1996, mit knappen 340.000 Kilometern auf dem Tacho. Der Preis ist auf dem ersten Blick gesalzen: 4000 Australisch Dollar, also knapp über 2000 Euro. Aber: Ich habe ihn bei dem Händler Travel Wheels gekauft und habe damit eine Garantie für Motor, Bremsen und andere Teile für die gesamten 12 Monate. Außerdem ist im Preis eine Verlängerung der Registrierung bis August 2010 drin. Das ist gut für den Wiederverkauf am Ende und eine Registrierung hätte mich auch noch ca. 600-800 Dollar gekostet. Etwas Campingequipment (Zelt, Gaskocher, Tisch, Stühle, Matratze um im Heck des Autos zu pennen usw.) is t auch noch dabei. Zudem machte der Ford auf mich einen sehr guten Eindruck. Der Ford Falcon gilt übrigens als sehr zuverlässig - ganz im Gegensatz zum hierzulande beliebten Spruch “Er fuhr Ford und kam nie wieder”. Meine Testfahrten in weniger befahrenen Gebieten habe ich auch gemacht - meine ersten linksfahr-Erahrungen also schon gesammelt.

Morgen werde ich dann den Wagen abholen und mich mitsamt des gekauften Navis (ja, gestern war ein teurer Tag für mich) Richtung Blue Mountains aufmachen, einem Gebirge westlich von Sydney - ca 2 Auto-Stunden entfernt. Den Namen haben die Blue Mountains durch die bläulichen Gase, die aus den Eukalyptus-Wäldern aufsteigen. Ich habe so eben in einer Jugendherberge dort für zwei Nächte reserviert, Internet soll da aber auch sein, werde also hoffentlich von dort ein kleines Update schreiben können.

Dann folgen auch Bilder von meinem neuen Autochen, dass ich Nico taufen werde, nach dem zukünftigen Formel-1-Weltmeister

Ach, ganz vergessen: Ich war heute noch im Museum of Contemporary Art, zu deutsch also Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst. Wiederholt musste ich dabei feststellen, dass Moderne Kunst ähnlich wie Mode irgendwie nicht mein Ding ist. Einige Kunstwerke haben zwar ihre Reitze, oft denke ich mir aber auch “Ein paar Bilder ausm Otto-Katalog ausschneiden und auf eine weiße Wand kleben kann ich auch!” So war ich auch nach ner guten Stunden schon wieder draußen…

Am gestrigen Sonntag war ich dann endlich bei dem Auto-Händler zu dem ich schonmal wollte. Ich ahne langsam, dass ich für den Auto-Kauf mehr Geld in die Hand nehmen muss, als geschätzt. Aber mal sehen, um das Thema Auto werde ich mich wohl morgen weiter kümmern. Sonst war ich noch im Australien Museum, dass viele verschiedene Bereiche abdeckt von Aborigine-Kunst bis zu Dinosauriern. Die aktuelle Mammut-Ausstellung, die extra kostete, war ihr Geld meiner Meinung nach nicht so recht wert, aber dafür war sonst noch so viel zu sehen, dass die drei Stunden bis zur Schließung nicht ganz reichten und ich einige interessante Dinge wie die ganzen verschiedenen, ekligen Spinnen oder den Skelett-Raum leider im Schnell-Durchlauf durchhetzen musste.

Wie es im Hostel oft so ist: Wenn man nach einem Trip durch die Stadt am frühen Abend in sein Zimmer zurückkommt findet man oft neue Zimmerkollegen vor. So in diesem Fall eine Südkoreanerin und einen Franzosen. Es gibt Menschen, die sieht man 5 Sekunden, hört sie fünf Worte sagen und weiß, dass man mit ihm prima auskommt. Der Franzose Samuel war so einer. Mit ihm bin ich dann mal ins Sydneyer Nachtleben. Oder wollte es zumindest. Sydney hat am Sonntag scheinbar kein richtiges Nachtleben (naja, vielleicht hätten wir es auch besser im Kings Cross-Stadtteil versuchen sollen). Auch die Bar bei der wir letzten Endes im Darling Harbour unser 7-Dollar Bier tranken hat um halb 12 dicht gemacht. Naja, wir wollten eh gerade gehen. Leider hat Samuel schon wieder das Hostel verlassen. Aber so ist es halt: Leute kommen, und Leute gehen.

Für 85 Dollar habe ich mir dann gestern noch den Lonely Planet Australien-Reiseführer in der deutschen Sprache besorgt. Der Lonely Planet gilt hier so ein wenig als Bibel unter den Reiseführern. Wohl auch wegen der stattlichen 1200 Seiten. Aber er sollte sich schon als lohnend erweisen, denn am heutigen Montag habe ich eine in ihm empfohlene Route vom Manly Beach aus durch ein Naturschutzgebiet abgelaufen. Der Weg war 10 Kilometer lang und dauerte etwas über drei Stunden. Nachdem er anfangs zwar nett, aber noch nicht so toll war, war er ab dem Anfang des Nationalparks wirklich toll. Ich könnte jetzt nach blumigen Worten suchen, aber lasse lieber die Bilder für sich sprechen. Den „Manly Scenic Walkway“, wie er glaube ich heißt, kann ich jedem Sydney-Reisenden bei gutem Wetter nur wärmstens ans Herz legen. Und mit 10 Dollar Kosten für den Weg hin mit Fähre und zurück mit Bus kommt man auch günstig davon. Ich freue mich jetzt schon auf richtige Wanderungen durch Australien aber dieser kleine Vorgeschmack war schon mal sehr schön.

Am Strand angekommen…

…gings dann noch durch ein hübsches Wohngebit, bei dem ich die ganze Zeit dachte: “Jo, hier lässt’s sich leben”. Dann gings mit dem Bus wieder 20 Minuten zurück in Sydneys Zentrum.
