Ich habe am Freitag American Gangster im Kino gesehen. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Gangster-Film, der im New York der 60er und 70er Jahre spielt und auf einer wahren Geschichte beruht. Der echte Gangster Frank Lucas, der im Film von Denzel Washington gespielt wird, hat zudem dem Fimteam in beratener Funktion zur Seite gestanden und laut Wikipedia keinen Drehtag verpasst. Das bürgt schonmal für einen gewissen Realismus und eine Einhaltung der wahren Story, zumindest halbwegs.

Nach all den Super-Kritiken bin ich dennoch mit etwas gemüschten Gefühl aus dem Kino gekommen. Ähnlich wie bei The Departed wurde ich auf hohem Niveau enttäuscht. Optisch ist der Film schon sehr gelungen und fängt das 70er-Jahre Flair wunderschön ein. Die durchwegs starke Besetzung, allen voran natürlich Denzel Washington und Russel Crowe in den Hauptrollen, tut ihr übriges, um sich der Atmosphäre des Films hingeben zu können. Dennoch: Dem Film fehlt das gewisse etwas. Es gibt eigentlich nichts, was man noch nicht gesehen hat (wenn auch vielleicht nicht in der Qualität): Von der Machart her erinnert der Film an andere Hollywood-Biographien der letzten Zeit wie “Ray” und “Walk the Line”. Und ja, dieser Gangster-Film ist eher Biographie denn Thriller, geht also weniger in die Richtung von “The Departed” als in die von Filmen wie “Goodfellas”, “Casino” und “Der Pate” - ohne aber in meinen Augen ganz an diese Meisterwerke ranzukommen.

Vielleicht fehlt irgendwie das richtig Monumentale, vielleicht sind selbst 157 Minuten für einen solchen Film einfach sogar noch einen Tick zu wenig, vielleicht fehlt eine pompösere Musikuntermalung. Denn nicht zuletzt diese macht aus den Pate-Filmen etwas Besonderes. Langeweile hatte ich dennoch nie, immer war ich interessiert, wie die Geschichte weitergeht. Nach einem vielleicht etwas trägen Anfang fand ich “American Gangster” im Verlauf immer und immer besser. Mit den letzten 30 Minuten als Höhepunkt - so soll es sein! Wenn ich mich jetzt schon darauf freue, mir den Film irgendwann in HD auf englisch anzusehen, spricht das zumindest für sich. Den ein oder anderen Oscar dürfte der Film wohl auch kassieren.

P.S.: 9,20 für eine Karte finde ich selbst bei einem Film mit Überlänge schon ziemlich hart!
